INFECTIOUS DISEASES CLINIC OBJECTIVES

University Hospitals Case Medical Center

ID Clinic:

one-half day clinic session/week x 1 month (elective) or as continuity clinic experience x 1-2 years

Goals and Objectives:

To become familiar with the outpatient management of common infectious disease syndromes

Teaching Methods:

Direct preceptorship with faculty infectious disease physician

Mix of patients, patient characteristics, clinical encounters, procedures, and services: Fellows involved in the ambulatory ID clinical practice attend clinic one-half day per week and assume primary responsibility for the care of patients while under the supervision of designated faculty members. Every effort is made to assign new patients to fellows when possible.

Initial consultations include a comprehensive examination, review of all relevant medical information, formulation of differential diagnosis and management plan, all of which are reviewed with the patient and faculty preceptor. All regularly scheduled visits are the responsibility of the assigned fellow. Any patient or referring physician correspondence is the primary responsibility of the involved fellow, under the guidance of the faculty advisor.

Any procedures performed (lumbar puncture, arthrocentesis, incision, and drainage) are completed under the supervision of the faculty mentor. Common clinic syndromes encountered include, but are not limited to, post-surgical wound infections, prosthetic device related infections, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, chronic meningitis, fever of unknown origin, transplant related infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and diabetic foot infections.

Educational Resources:

Fellows participate in ID journal club as well as weekly didactic case conferences. Fellows are encouraged to present interesting or complex management cases for discussion in our weekly case conferences , and when possible, our regional infectious disease citywide case conferences. Consultation with the current literature is strongly encouraged, and fellows have a comprehensive library of infectious disease journals at their disposal for review.

Evaluation:

The precepting faculty physician conducts evaluations.
