BIODEFENSE AND EMERGING INFECTIONS
As part of a major NIH award to Washington University in St. Louis, MO in 2003, CWRU will undertake projects related to the immune response to vaccines addressing agents of bioterrorism and emerging infectious diseases.
Additionally, a clinical trials and vaccine unit is being established at CWRU/UHCMC to test vaccines, new diagnostics or therapeutics aimed at microorganisms involved in bioterrorism or in emerging infectious diseases.
This activity will be directed by Robert A. Salata, M.D. Additional work related to West Nile infection (Drs. Michael Cho, Jonathan Karn and Robert A. Salata) and in SARS (Michael Cho, Ph.D.) enhances our portfolio in research in emerging infections.
A Presidential Research Initiative award was given to Dr. Salata and Ken Laparo, Ph.D. from Engineering to develop a laboratory-based surveillance system for agents of bioterrorism and emerging infections.
The Midwest Regional Center of Excellence will be recompeted in 2008 and the efforts at CWRU/UHCMC will be coordinated by Drs. Salata, Karn and Kazura (Center for Global Health and Disease).
